Michelle Duggar, star of the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, has recently come under fire for her views on gay and transgendered people. Over 130,000 people have signed a change.org petition calling for the cancellation of her hit show. However not everyone disagrees with her and her families beliefs. A counter petition has formed in ipetitions.com and is gaining steam with 6,000 signatures so far. Should the Duggars be penalized for expressing their personal views? The fact that they are conservative Baptists is no secret. So when they speak out against things like gay rights and abortion why are people shocked?
It all started with a recorded message that Michelle Duggar taped in opposition to an anti-discrimination bill in her home state of Arkansas. One part of this ordinance allows transgendered people to use the restroom of of the gender that they identify with. Apparently Michelle Duggar has an issue with this because her message is centered around this. She feels that pedophiles and rapists would use this law to assault women and children. The likelihood of that is debatable and is a cheap way of causing fear that would prevent a bill that aims to prevent discrimination from being passed.
Lights, Camera, Censorship
The Duggars are not ordinary citizens. They are employees of the TLC network. TLC has to answer to advertisers and if there is one thing that advertisers hate it is controversy. A recent example that perfectly illustrates this point is the cancelation of the popular TLC show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The shows matriarch Mama June entered into a questionable relationship with a convicted sex offender. Photographic evidence of this was featured in countless tabloids. It is also important to mention that the man was convicted of molesting Mama June’s oldest daughter. Photographs that showed Mama June and her 9 year old daughter Alana (A.K.A Honey Boo Boo) with this man proved to be the final straw for TLC. They nipped this controversy in the bud before they it could bite them in the ass. If signatures on this petition continue to grow the Duggars could suffer the same fate.
Everyone’s Got One
Everyone has an opinion and in this case that opinion is something that is offensive to much of the world. Yet as much as we would like to ignore the truth we must admit that the Duggars are not alone in their beliefs. Since their views are based on their religious beliefs how can detractors expect them to change. The star the the A&E show Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson, also found himself in a similar situation when expressing his views on homosexuality. These views are based on his beliefs as a devout Christian. In GQ magazine he stated that thought homosexuality was illogical and a sinful act on same level as terrorism or bestiality. He was suspended from the show but would eventually return because in the end viewers chose to stand behind him and the show.
Agree To Disagree
The beautiful thing about being an American citizen is the freedom to express ones own beliefs. While I completely disagree with the views of people like Phil Robertson and the Duggars I realize that they have the right to believe what they wish. I also realize that no one has the ability to change these deep seated beliefs inside of them and that taking away their presence on television will not do a single thing thing to change their views or anyone else’s. So let the Duggars have whatever beliefs they chose. If I disagree with them I can choose to not support their show. The best way to end discrimination is to support laws that promote equal rights. Pushing people who have opposing views into the shadows does nothing to further either sides agenda.
